Washing the Feet - Poetry of God’s World

He bent down and washed their feet
We read about this gesture
We know how it feels to stoop to another
I am always moved when I read
about Him washing His disciples’ feet
I am always moved when others
repeat that gesture

On “Mister Rogers Neighborhood”
Fred invited his friend  Officer Clemens
to cool his feet with him
in a child size wading pool
Fred dried Police Officer Clemens’ feet
in joy and goodwill
for a dear neighbor
black police officer Clemens

In the funeral eulogy for his father
the younger George Bush shared this:
James Baker his father’s dear colleague
in a final farewell to his dying friend
gently rubbed his feet

Because of an injury
someone is helping to wash my feet
She bends washes and dries
in good humor
I don’t think she knows
the significance that gesture has for me
