A Summary of Gratitude Rooted in Faith Thanksgiving Service

CommUNITY’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Service By JoAnne Markowska

Yearly, Interface CommUnity of South Valley, organizes a Thanksgiving Service for the community to bring together people of faith. The Interfaith movement for human integrity is a statewide California organization that connects people to work for social justice. Something every human being should have access to.

This year it was celebrated on Sunday, November 23 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with yummy refreshments afterwards. Several Clergy and Spiritual Believers participated together and led the congregation in prayer and song including: The Church of Latter-day Saints, Blue Lotus Kirya Yoga Meditation Center, South Valley Islamic Center, Congregation Emeth (Reform Jewish Community), Agape Live (International Spiritual Center), Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Dhammakaya Meditation Center (The Buddha’s discourse on Loving Kindness) and Advent Lutheran Church.

Many hymns were led by a choir who had one hour to practice before the service. They did a beautiful job working together and leading the people present in song. A heartfelt chant was presented by the Buddhist Monks. This is a service that should not be missed. A feeling of togetherness, hope, and thanksgiving is ever present during the celebration. Our very own, Father Ernie, led the closing prayer (below), and personally one of my favorites.

St. Theresa’s Prayer
May today there be peace within you.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born in faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
Amen.
